#artMore you might like
Hey everyone!! I just wanted to say thank you so much for 17k+ notes. This is the farthest my art has ever reached, and out of all my pieces, I’m so glad it could have been this one. It’s been so so so nice to read the tags and find it connecting with so many other people, and it’s been so so so nice to see other trans Chinese people finding the comic? It’s so comforting to see other people having similar experiences to mine and it’s just such a good feeling to know we’re not alone in this :) So thank you all!!!!
Oh and- Bodhisattva Guanshiyin is transfem but to clarify, she is traditionally nonbinary!!

1920 c. Just before the emergence of Art Deco, here is a last gasp of Art Nouveau design in this bracelet by Luis Masriera. It’s made of gold, colored glass, diamonds and cameo. From Art Deco, FB.
aaaaa ‘colored glass’ doesn’t even come CLOSE, my friend. This is not like leadlighting. That is plique-a-jour (light-of-day) enamelling, on a curve, with multiple colors, in tiny ‘cells’ made out of gold wire no thicker than your fingernail (which in and of themselves would have been a stone cold bitch to make aaa they are so tiny and those joints are so perfect HOW DID HE DO THAT).
Every. single. cell, has to be ‘hand-filled’ with wet enamel, which has a texture very much like watercolor paint, allowed to set, refilled until the surface tension holds, and then fired in a kiln at a very precise temperature and time, which is different for each color. And then the enamel shrinks back to the edges of the cell so you have to let it cool, refill, and then fire again. I’ve had to refill a single cell as many as four times to get color fill.
Blues and greens are the easiest, so you do them first. You take the kiln to a slightly higher temperature, have a few more seconds of leeway before they go horribly discolored on you. Oh, and this is using a modern kiln with a precise, digital temperature controller, not whatever this dude had back in the 1920s which would have involved a lot of guesswork and standing by the kiln counting under his breath because enamel fires in SECONDS.
Guess which colors are the hardest? That’s right, REDS. The colors this stunning bracelet is full of. I LOATHE working with reds. Ten seconds too long, five degrees too hot, and they’re ugly, black-flecked disasters that have to be dissolved out with acid, not incidentally trashing the other colours you’d spent forever on too. Yay.
And when you’ve finally finished, having spend probably hundreds of hours getting all those tiny cells fired and filled? Time to sit down with a bowl of water and a hard grinding stone and grind every single one of them flat, my friend, because the enamel when properly filled actually domes up slightly. Yes, this part is still best done by hand, even today.
Don’t forget to repolish your gold, making sure to get out all the scratches left by your glass-polishing stone, and set all those diamonds and the cameo!
What’s that, you say? One of your glass cells fractured because you used a tiny bit too much pressure setting a diamond?
Dear me. Time to UN-set all those stones and go back to the kiln again. Have a lovely time!
‘Colored glass’, indeed. Hmph.
Okay but what if all of the potions edits in Snape’s old textbook were just things he overheard James say in potions class because “no Padfoot you crush the bean! Cutting it doesn’t do anything! Trust me my dad told me”
But I love this because then when Harry always talks about how the prince is a much better teacher than Snape he would actually be learning from his father and grandfather…
I’m not crying
My eyes are just glistening with the ghost of my past
Based on what I’ve read on Pottermore, that’s basically 100% accurate cause James’ dad created a ton of potions (like Skele-Gro and the hair potion Hermione uses for the Yule Ball) and got super rich and that’s why James never had a job and left Harry tons of money. James would have handy potions making knowledge of that sort.
That’s exactly what I meant
A lot of people took this to mean that James was the one who was really good at potions and it was his favorite subject but all I meant was that he was probably very knowledgable about potions and couldn’t help giving his friends advice that Snape probably overheard
Like my dad is a doctor and although science may not be my thing I’m still probably more knowledgable than the average person especially with all of the lowkey medical work I’ve done over the years
OMG OMG OMG!
Ok, ok ok,
You know that joke that went around about “Why didn’t Harry recognize The Prince’s handwriting when he’d been staring at it on the board for 6 years?”
What if that was because it was James’s handwriting? He wrote the notes and Snape stole the book from James as a “Haha, fuck you, lets see how well you do without your cheat sheets” Then writing ”This book belongs to the half blood Prince.” to gloat that he took something from James Potter.
James is the only one we see use Levicorpus besides Harry.
I know that means James created sectumsempra, but still, it was a time of war and death eaters, maybe he created it as a last resort thing.
New head cannon
It actually makes more sense that James would have notated Sectumsempra “for enemies” because what would Snape care? If he wrote it, he would know what it does. Maybe James even overheard it or saw it used and wanted to warn himself in case he ever remembered the word but not the context and what would happen.
THIS THIS THIS OMG THIS @icanhelpyouthere @mangoapplepie @lycanthropuns THIS (also cry with me because harry wouldn’t know what james’ handwriting looked like)
That’s ok I’ll just cry myself to sleep tonight.
And it makes sense for Snape to want to get much better at Potions. Lily was repeatedly said to be the star of the class by Slughorn, and Snape must have wanted to impress her just to have something in common to talk to her because let’s be real, they deviated from each other when he started hanging with the dark magic practitioners. And who better to cheat off from than James Potter, the guy who’s like his archnemesis?
HOLY FLYING SHIT it just makes so much SENSE though, i feel like that’s a hidden obviousness J K Rowling has been waiting years for us to get
Thank you for reminding me that I have no idea what I’m doing with my art
@mediocreatbestart Me neither tbh… I think that’s part of the whole art thing…or at least I hope so
And I worried myself sick over naming my art. This is so liberating.
Some hand doodles.
Originally these started out as some practice sketches for more It fanart, idk.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DODIEEEEEEEE
[sorry it’s been so long and i did these v quickly ahhhhhhh]
